Heart of Steel

1983, TV-Movie

Gary played Lee, the idealistic younger brother of Peter Strauss's Emory, a steelworker put out of work by the collapse of the steel industry. Lee has dreams of going places, but ends up in the steel mills with his brother. Since this is Gary's first film role, he's only onscreen for a few minutes, but it's a good part. Pamela Reed also co-starred.

Fatal Vision

1984, TV-Movie

This was Gary's breakthrough role, in which he played Capt. Jeffrey McDonald, the army doctor accused of killing his wife and children. A relative unkown when cast, he plays the leading role in this excellent film. His portrayal managed to be both sympathetic and chilling at the same time. It's the first of several roles in which he manages to play an incredibly arrogant character in a sympathetic fashion. His co-stars included Karl Malden and Eva Marie Saint.  Buy it on VHS tape!

First Steps

1985, TV-Movie

The role of Manny, a rock musician, was one of Gary's smallest parts--he only appeared in a single scene in this film about a teenage girl who is left paralyzed in an accident and works her way back to walking. Judd Hirsch, Kim Darby and Amy Steel headed up the cast.

To Live and Die in L.A.

1985, Feature Film

Gary appears uncredited in this film about a Secret Service agent trying to exact revenge on the counterfeiter who killed his partner. In his single scene he is chased by down and tackled by his Remains Theatre co-founder, William L. Peterson. It was his first role in a feature film. Willem Dafoe and John Pankow also co-star.

Vital Signs

1986, TV-Movie

Dr. David Hayward was another leading role for Gary, even though he didn't get top billing. He played a young surgeon who moves back to his home town to help his alcoholic father, a respected physician, face his drinking problem. Meanwhile, David has problems of his own that he can't quite face. Ed Asner and Barbara Barrie played his parents.

Lucas

1986, Feature Film

Almost a blink-and-you'll-miss-him kind of role, Gary played an assistant coach in this story of a teenager with social problems. Watch carefully for him in the locker room and on the football game sidelines. Playing the lead role of Lucas was Corey Haim; the movie also features Winona Ryder, Charlie Sheen, Courtney Thorne-Smith and Jeremy Piven early in their careers.  Buy it on VHS tape.

Echoes in the Darkness

1987, TV-Miniseries

As Jack Holtz, Gary was among those investigating the murder of a Philadelphia school teacher. He gave some nice nuances to the character, believably showing his insecurities as a young agent. Leading the cast were Peter Coyote, Robert Loggia and Stockard Channing. Peter Boyle, who later played Gary's father in Midnight Caller, portrayed his mentor in this film.  Purchase it on VHS tape!

Midnight Caller

1988-1991, TV Series

Gary was terrific in his three seasons as Jack Killian, ex-cop turned radio talk show host in San Francisco. The show explored a range of social issues and gave Gary a chance to show off primarily his dramatic, but also his comedy skills and even his impressionist abilities in various episodes. Co-starring were Wendy Kilbourne and Dennis Dun. Visit the Midnight Caller Episode Guide for more information on the show--and a look back from Gary himself!

Those She Left Behind

1989, TV-Movie

As Scott Grimes, Gary portrayed the agony of a man who loses his wife in childbirth, and is left to fend for himself with a newborn daughter. Although the ending was a bit unbelievable, Gary's protrayal of the difficulties of facing parenthood alone was right on the mark. Joanna Kerns and Colleen Dewhurst co-starred.
